I am a Canadian immigrant who immigrated in the late 1970's. I worked hard to give my children good education. I have a daughter who graduated university and is going to a developing country to work in a multi-national firm.
It is a bittersweet experience for me. I cannot be very happy because my daughter will be far away. Meanwhile, she is very excited and is disappointed that I am not in a celebratory mood.
Does anyone share this kind of experience? I always thought that Canada is a land of opportunity, but it seems that Canada has lost of lot of good jobs in the last few years.

My opinion is that in developed countries, there are few opportunities for young people to start at the top. They usually start at the entry level and work up.
On the other hand, in fast growing developing countries, there is usually a shortage for high level skills. Graduates from developed countries like Canada and the USA can bring with them not just skills, but also knowledge that they have simply from living in a developed country.
Do not worry about your child going to a foreign country. With today's air travel, no country is more than 24 hours away. Unlike in previous generations, when children leave, parents do not know if they will ever get together again with their children. Travel is expensive and could take months.
Your child will not only gain invaluable experience, but also be an ambassador of Canada spreading goodwill and fostering good international networking and relations. We now live in an international global village. It will be people like her who is not afraid to move in different countries who can help build tomorrow's future.
Where we live here in Canada, there are pocket communities of people who are content in staying in their tiny little communities and not go anywhere. They are completely isolated from what is happening in the real world. This is not necessarily better. So cheer up!
