It was my mother who introduced me to bubble tea. After watching a movie at the Metrotown mall, she said she would like to buy me a drink.
I never heard of bubble tea, and when I saw the prices, I thought $3.50 is a lot to pay for a cold milk tea. Anyway, my mom wants to buy me a drink, so why not!
Then, the flavors to choose from... taro, red bean, mungbeans, nata de coco, almond, coconut, and the fruity flavors including papaya, mango, lychee, watermelon, honeydew, canteloupe and possible combinations such as taro with mungbeans, red bean with grass jelly... on and on. And of course, the pearls. I settled for a almond taro pearl tea.
The drink came with a fat big straw, and when I sucked on my first PEARL, what a sensation! The black translucent pearls, (made of tapioca) CHEWY. Each bite would last a few seconds, and I AM HOOKED! A drink would provide a delightful sensation for at least 10 to 15 minutes, and the fruity flavors are refreshing.
From then on, I would rather have a bubble tea anytime over coffee. Who would have thought that an innocent little drink would be hot and popular amongst young kids and oldie like myself.
